Janice Everett

British born, Brooklyn based artist-designer; Janice arrived in New York City after earning her MA at Royal College of Art in London to pursue a career in the fashion industry as a commercial textile artist. As part of the downtown Manhattan artist scene in the late 70's she lead a parallel existence taking photographs of the city and writing songs and poetry to keep her artist self alive. Moving to a loft in Brooklyn her textile work became more craft orientated by joining forces with another British artist to create a line of hand woven scarves, fabrics and fiber art. Her fiber art pieces were shown in a variety of group shows during the 80’s and 90’s.

I started using original photographs taken in urban and nature settings transformed into new images using reflection for intriguing and dimensional effects.

While still using photography as a source for inspiration I have moved back to handwork to express my ongoing interest on composition and depictions of three-dimensional space on a relatively flat surface. Returning to the medium of textiles has been a great pleasure for the meditative experience of sewing, tactile connection, and for using vintage fabrics collected over the decades. The new series of quilted pieces go back to my roots in basic design studies from my art school training back in the U.K.
